Guide cover: How to Resize a PDF Online — change page size to A4, Letter and more

To resize a PDF online for free, open it in the Resize PDF tool, pick the new page size — A3, A4, A5, Letter or Legal — choose the orientation, and download a copy with every page resized and its content scaled to fit, centred on the new page. Mixed-size documents come out uniform and print-ready. Nothing is uploaded, and your original file is never changed.

When a Uniform Page Size Matters

Mixed page sizes cause quiet problems. A printer complains, or silently scales some pages and not others. A binder's pages do not align. A filing system expects one size and gets three. The usual cause is assembly: a form in US Letter, a letter in A4, a contract in Legal, bound into one application pack. Each page is individually fine; together they are awkward. Resizing fixes the pack, not the pages: every page is embedded whole into a fresh page of the chosen size, drawn at the largest scale that fits, centred both ways. Because pages are embedded rather than re-rendered, text stays selectable and vector content stays sharp at any size.

Enlarging works the same way as shrinking. A small page scaled up to a larger sheet does not gain detail — its content is drawn larger, so fine print becomes readable but no new sharpness appears. That distinction matters when deciding whether to resize up or to re-create a page: resizing changes presentation, not information.

Using the Resize PDF Tool, Step by Step

  1. Choose or drop your PDF. The tool reads it locally and reports the page count, so you can verify the document you opened is the one you meant.
  2. Pick the target page size. A3 (297 by 420 mm), A4 (210 by 297 mm), A5 (148 by 210 mm), Letter (8.5 by 11 inches) or Legal (8.5 by 14 inches). A4 is the safe default for international filing; Letter is the default for US recipients.
  3. Choose the orientation. Match each page keeps landscape pages landscape and portrait pages portrait. Forcing one orientation for the whole document scales a landscape page down to fit a portrait sheet, with white bands above and below — never rotated or clipped.
  4. Click Resize and download. Every page in the result measures exactly the size you chose. Open the download and confirm the page count matches the original.

Tip: Choose Match each page unless you have a reason to force one orientation. Forcing portrait on a landscape table shrinks it to fit a narrow sheet and wastes the width; matching orientation keeps each page at its largest readable size on the target sheet.

Scale Factors When Resizing to A4

Resizing to A4 scales each source page by the smaller of its width ratio and its height ratio, so the whole page fits without clipping. The table below works the arithmetic for the common source sizes, so you can predict how much smaller — or larger — each page will appear. A Letter page shrinks only slightly, to about 97 percent; a Legal page shrinks to about 83 percent because its height governs; an A5 page grows to about 141 percent, because both dimensions scale up to fill A4.

Worked Example: Unifying a Three-Size Application Pack to A4

An application pack mixes three sizes: a Letter-sized form (2 pages), an A4 letter (3 pages) and a Legal-sized contract (4 pages) — 9 pages in total. Resizing the pack to A4 scales the Letter pages to about 97 percent, the Legal pages to about 83 percent, and leaves the A4 pages at 100 percent. The result is a uniform 9-page A4 document: the printer stops complaining, nothing is clipped, and the bundle files and prints as one tidy document. The verification is the page count — still 9 — and a spot check that the Legal contract's smallest print remains legible at 83 percent, since that is the page that shrank the most.

Getting the Best Result When You Resize

Resize for the recipient, not for yourself. A document bound for a US office should be Letter; a document bound for a European filing system should be A4; a document that will only ever be read on screen does not need resizing at all. Resizing to the wrong standard creates the very problem it was meant to solve, because the recipient must then convert it back, with another round of scaling.

Check the smallest print after resizing, not the largest headings. Headings survive any scale; footnotes, table notes and contract small print are what suffer when a Legal page shrinks to 83 percent on A4. Open the smallest-print page in the download and read it at the size it will actually be printed or viewed. If it is no longer legible, the answer is not a different page size — it is a decision about whether that content belongs on the page at all, or whether the document should stay at its original size.

Keep the original alongside the resized copy when the document has legal weight. Contracts, certificates and filed forms are often expected in their original size, and a resized copy, however clean, may not satisfy a filing requirement. The resized version is for reading and printing convenience; the original remains the record.

Common Mistakes When Resizing a PDF

1. Resizing when you should crop. If the content is fine but the margins are fat, cropping removes the margins without shrinking the text. Resizing shrinks everything, text included.

2. Forcing one orientation on mixed pages. A forced portrait document shrinks landscape tables into narrow bands. Match each page unless the recipient specifically requires one orientation.

3. Expecting a smaller file. Resizing does not reliably shrink a file — content is preserved, so size changes little either way. Use Compress PDF when file size is the goal.

4. Expecting enlarging to add sharpness. Scaling a page up makes its content larger, not sharper. Fine print that was unreadable at small size becomes larger but no more detailed.

5. Skipping the page-count check. Resizing never adds or removes pages. If the download's count differs from the original, the wrong file was resized or the download failed — re-run from the original.

Key takeaway: Resizing a PDF embeds each page whole onto a fresh page of the chosen size, scaled to fit and centred, so text stays selectable and vectors stay sharp. Match orientation per page, predict the scale from the width and height ratios, and verify the page count after downloading.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I resize a PDF online for free?

Open the PDF in the Resize PDF tool, pick the target size (A3, A4, A5, Letter or Legal) and orientation, then download the resized copy.

Will my text stay selectable?

Yes. Pages are embedded and scaled as live PDF content, not flattened into images, so text, links and vectors survive the resize.

What is the difference between A4 and Letter?

A4 is 210 by 297 mm, used almost everywhere except North America; US Letter is 216 by 279 mm — slightly wider and shorter. Resizing between them scales content by roughly 94 to 97 percent, which is why the fit is nearly invisible.

Can I resize to a custom size?

This tool offers the five standard sizes most documents need. For trimming edges rather than changing the sheet, use Crop PDF.

Does resizing make the file smaller?

Not reliably — content is preserved, so size changes little either way. Use Compress PDF when file size is the goal.

What happens to a landscape page in a portrait document?

With Match each page, it gets a landscape target page. Force Portrait and it is scaled down to fit the portrait sheet with white bands above and below — never rotated or clipped.

Does resizing change the page count?

No. Every page in the source appears in the result, at the new size; the count is unchanged.
