Understanding color codes

HEX & RGB

RGB combines red, green and blue light, each from 0–255. HEX writes the same three channels in hexadecimal: #FF0000 is red, #000000 black and #FFFFFF white.

HSL & HSB

HSL uses hue, saturation and lightness. HSB (also called HSV) uses brightness instead. Hue is an angle; saturation, lightness and brightness are percentages.

CMYK & print

CMYK describes cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink. Screen RGB and printer CMYK have different gamuts. A mathematical conversion cannot guarantee the same printed color.

Shades, tints & palettes

Use lighter tints for backgrounds and darker shades for emphasis. Extracted palettes are representative, not every pixel color. Always check text contrast before using a palette in a design.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before using the output?

A chosen color alone does not guarantee accessible contrast against your background.

What if a file or action is unsupported?

Check the input format and any visible error, try a smaller test case, and confirm the browser supports the required feature. Do not treat an empty output as a successful result.
