How to Calculate Your Freelance Hourly Rate: Take-Home Pay, Tax and Billable Hours
Your freelance hourly rate is not your salary divided by 2,080. Work backwards from the take-home pay you want: add business expenses, gross the total up for tax, then divide by the hours clients actually pay for. At $90,000 take-home, $12,000 expenses and 22% tax over 1,040 billable hours, the rate is $125.74 an hour.
