Your Shopify bill is never just the plan price: every order also pays a card rate, and using a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments adds Shopify’s own transaction fee on top. Enter your monthly revenue — or build it from average order value × orders — pick a plan and a payment route, and see the full monthly cost, the effective % of revenue, and what each order really costs you. Everything updates live in your browser.

Your revenue, orders and payment route held constant; only the plan changes. Higher plans trade a bigger subscription for lower per-sale rates, so the winner flips as volume grows.

Total up what a Shopify store really costs each month: the plan price, Shopify Payments card processing at your plan’s rate (2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, falling to 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus), or — if you take payments through an external gateway — Shopify’s additional third-party transaction fee for your plan (2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus). Enter revenue directly or build it from average order value × orders, then read the total monthly cost, the effective % of revenue, the cost per order, and a same-store comparison across all four plans. A store taking $10,000 a month across 200 orders on the Basic plan with Shopify Payments: processing = $10,000 × 2.9% + 200 × $0.30 = $290 + $60 = $350. Add the $39 plan and the total monthly Shopify cost is $389 — an effective 389 ÷ 10,000 = 3.89% of revenue, or $389 ÷ 200 = $1.95 per order. The same store on an external gateway would owe Shopify $39 + 2% × $10,000 = $239, but its gateway’s own processing charges would come on top of that — which is why the Shopify Payments route is usually the cheaper one in total.
With Shopify Payments: processing = revenue × plan card % + orders × $0.30, and no additional Shopify transaction fee is charged. Card rates (online, standard cards, US): Basic 2.9% + 30¢, Grow 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced 2.5% + 30¢, Plus 2.25% + 30¢. With an external gateway: Shopify’s fee = revenue × plan third-party % (Basic 2%, Grow 1%, Advanced 0.6%, Plus 0.2%), charged on top of the gateway’s own processing rate, which this calculator does not estimate because it depends on your agreement with that gateway. Total monthly cost = plan price (billed monthly: Basic $39, Grow $105, Advanced $399, Plus from $2,300) + the route’s fees. Effective % = total ÷ revenue × 100; cost per order = total ÷ orders. Yearly billing lowers the plan prices (Basic $29, Grow $79, Advanced $299 a month; Plus from $2,300 on a 3-year term) — the calculator uses monthly-billing prices so comparisons stay conservative. On Basic with Shopify Payments and 200 orders: $39 plan + $350 processing ($290 percentage + $60 fixed) = $389, which is 3.89% of revenue. On Grow the same store pays $105 + $330 = $435 — the lower card rate does not yet repay the bigger subscription. The crossover comes at higher volume, which the comparison table shows for your own figures.
The extra percentage Shopify charges when an order is paid through a gateway other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, charged on the order total and on top of whatever that gateway itself charges you. It applies even if Shopify Payments is also switched on, for the orders that go through the other gateway. Source: shopify.com/pricing, checked 29 October 2026.
Because every Shopify Payments transaction also carries a fixed 30¢. At a $100 average order that is a rounding error (3.2% effective on Basic); at a $10 average order it doubles the take to 5.9%. Two stores with identical revenue can pay very different totals if one sells many small orders — which is why this calculator asks for orders, not just revenue.
Yes — on Shopify’s pricing page, yearly billing cuts Basic from $39 to $29 a month, Grow from $105 to $79 and Advanced from $399 to $299, roughly a 25% saving, in exchange for paying the year up front. This calculator prices monthly billing so you see the flexible, worst-case figure; if you are committed for a year, your plan line will be lower than shown.
On card fees alone with Shopify Payments, Grow saves 0.2% of revenue plus nothing on the fixed fee, for $66 more a month — so it breaks even around $33,000 of monthly revenue ($66 ÷ 0.2%). Below that, upgrade for Grow’s features (staff accounts, reporting), not for the fees. The comparison table runs this exact test on your numbers, for every plan.
No. With Shopify Payments you pay only the card processing rate for your plan — there is no additional Shopify transaction fee on top. The transaction fee exists solely for orders processed through third-party and alternative gateways.
