PayPal’s commercial fee is a percentage of the payment plus a fixed fee that depends on the currency you receive. Pick how you are paid and your currency below, see what you keep — or work backwards from the amount you want to receive. International payments add 1.50% on top. Fees checked 29 October 2026 against PayPal’s own business fees page (source under the calculator). Everything runs in your browser.
The maths: fee = payment × percentage rate + fixed fee. You receive = payment − fee. Currency conversion, where PayPal converts the money for you, carries a separate spread and is not included here.
The fixed fee is why small payments lose the most: on a $5 payment at Checkout rates the fee is about 13.3% of the payment, while on $500 it is about 3.6%. PayPal’s separate micropayments, QR code, charity and Pay Later rates are not covered here — check the official fees page if one of those is your rate.
Standard rates for receiving domestic transactions (PayPal US business fees page): PayPal Checkout 3.49% + fixed fee; standard credit and debit card payments 2.99% + fixed fee; all other commercial transactions 3.49% + fixed fee. Additional percentage for international commercial transactions: 1.50% on all commercial transactions. Fixed fee for commercial transactions, by currency received: USD 0.49, EUR 0.39, GBP 0.39, AUD 0.59, CAD 0.59. Source: paypal.com — Fees for merchant and business accounts. See what a PayPal commercial payment really leaves you: the percentage rate for how you are paid, plus the fixed fee for your currency — USD, EUR, GBP, AUD or CAD — what you receive, the amount to request to net an exact target, and the extra 1.50% on international payments. Fees checked 29 October 2026 against PayPal’s own business fees page.
You receive a $100 payment through PayPal Checkout in USD: the fee is $100 × 3.49% + $0.49 = $3.98, so you receive $96.02. To receive exactly $100 instead, request ($100 + $0.49) ÷ (1 − 0.0349) = $104.12 — the fee on that request is $4.12, leaving your $100 whole. The same $100 paid as a standard card payment costs $100 × 2.99% + $0.49 = $3.48 in fees, and if the payment is international the Checkout rate rises to 4.99% and the fee to $5.48. Fee = payment × percentage rate + fixed fee, where the percentage rate depends on the payment type (PayPal Checkout and all other commercial transactions 3.49%; standard credit and debit card payments 2.99%, on PayPal’s published domestic US schedule) and the fixed fee depends on the currency received (USD 0.49, EUR 0.39, GBP 0.39, AUD 0.59, CAD 0.59). International commercial transactions add 1.50 percentage points to the rate. You receive = payment − fee. Amount to request for a target = (target + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage rate as a fraction), which is exact before rounding to cents. Empty fields show a dash instead of a misleading breakdown.
On PayPal’s published US schedule it depends on how you are paid: PayPal Checkout (including Guest Checkout and Pay with Venmo) and all other commercial transactions are 3.49% plus a fixed fee, while standard credit and debit card payments are 2.99% plus the fixed fee. In USD the fixed fee is $0.49, so a $100 Checkout payment costs $3.98 and a $100 card payment costs $3.48.
Gross the amount up: (target + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage rate). At Checkout rates in USD that is ($100 + $0.49) ÷ 0.9651 = $104.12 — PayPal takes $4.12 from the request and you keep exactly $100. At card rates it is $103.59. The reverse section works this out for any target, currency and rate.
The fixed fee follows the currency you receive: €0.39 in euros, £0.39 in UK pounds sterling, $0.59 in Australian dollars and $0.59 in Canadian dollars, against $0.49 in US dollars — all from the fixed-fee table on PayPal’s official business fees page. PayPal publishes fixed fees for many more currencies there.
PayPal adds 1.50% to the percentage rate on international commercial transactions — when sender and receiver are in different markets. At Checkout rates that makes 4.99% plus the fixed fee, so a $100 USD payment costs $5.48 instead of $3.98. Turn on the international toggle to include it. If PayPal also converts the currency, a conversion spread applies on top.
Because of the fixed fee. At Checkout rates in USD, the fee on a $5 payment is $0.17 percentage part plus $0.49 fixed — about 13.3% of the payment — while on $500 the fixed fee is a rounding error next to the 3.49% and the effective rate is about 3.6%. The calculator shows the effective fee on every amount so the effect is visible.
PayPal’s table lists Send/Receive Money for Goods and Services at 2.99% without a fixed fee shown, separate from the card-payment row at 2.99% plus fixed fee. Which row applies depends on how the payment is made and your market — this calculator uses the two rows that carry the standard percentage-plus-fixed structure, and the official fees page is the place to confirm your exact case.
