AnyPS5 turns PlayStation 5 games into native Windows and Linux programs — no emulator, no console, no PlayStation Store. It rewrites a game's PS5 executable once, ahead of time, into a normal .exe or Linux program, and replaces Sony's system libraries with its own clean-room versions. As of the October 23, 2026 community map, 301 games have a recorded stage, 38 reach gameplay, and 7 are playable start to finish. Small games already play well; big 3D games are the frontier — and that frontier is exactly why Sony should be watching.
AnyPS5: PS5 games as native PC programs
AnyPS5 is the project Sony should lose sleep over, and the reason is a technical distinction most headlines miss: it is not an emulator. An emulator pretends to be the console while the game runs inside it. AnyPS5 instead rewrites the game's PS5 executable once, ahead of time, into a normal Windows .exe or Linux program, and replaces the console's system libraries with its own clean-room versions. There is no console being imitated while you play and no separate runtime process. It works because the PS5's processor is an AMD Zen 2 chip speaking the same x86-64 language as a desktop PC, so the game's own code runs directly. What has to be rebuilt is everything around it: system functions (memory, files, sound, fonts, saves, network) and graphics, whose shaders are recompiled to SPIR-V for Vulkan.
The closest analogy is Wine, which reimplements the Windows API so Windows programs run on Linux. AnyPS5 does the same for Sony's platform libraries — except Sony's SDK is smaller, more focused, and entirely undocumented from the outside, which is why every system function a game calls still has to be reimplemented by hand.
Who is behind AnyPS5
The project lives on GitHub at github.com/boykopovar/AnyPS5, run by GitHub user boykopovar, and is developed with heavy AI-assisted reverse engineering. It hit the Hacker News front page, passed 7,000 GitHub stars in its launch week and stood at 8,861 stars by October 7, 2026. Releases moved fast: v0.1.0 and v0.1.1 on September 28, 2026, v0.1.2 around October 14, and v0.1.3 on October 20–21 (which added DualSense motion sensors, rumble, adaptive triggers and the light bar). It is free and open source under GPL-2.0, with no paid edition. The compatibility tracking is done by an independent community blocker map (MIT licence, started October 10) that reads the repo's issues, pull requests and discussions and assigns each game a stage — it states clearly that it is not an official page.
AnyPS5 speed: what actually runs, and how fast
Because there is no emulation layer, there is no translation overhead — in theory a converted game could run as fast as a native PC port. In practice, missing libraries dominate. Reported frame rates, with the hardware and the caveat attached:
| Game | Reported speed | Hardware / status |
|---|---|---|
| Dreaming Sarah | 60 FPS (official table); 36 FPS on integrated graphics | GTX 1050 Ti / i5-7500; Intel HD Graphics 620 / i5-7200 (official table, retired October 12) |
| Dead Cells (PPSA15552) | About 55–60 FPS indoors, 30–35 FPS outdoors at 4K | Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RTX 5070 Ti; menus, music and sound confirmed |
| Vampire Survivors | 60 FPS | Community report; not fully playable overall |
| GTA V (PS5 version) | About 27 FPS in the opening prologue (testing branch); earlier draft reports said about 10 FPS | Testing branch only; crashes; figures vary by branch and date |
| Phasmophobia | 25 FPS | Community report; not fully playable |
| Astro Bot | About 17–19 FPS, then freezes while sound continues | Separate testing branch, October 5 report |
| Demon's Souls | About 11 FPS at 4K in menus and intro cinematic | First level hits an unsupported draw command |
| Ghost of Yotei | Reaches brightness calibration, then the image goes black | October 7 report |
| Epic Mickey | 4 FPS | Community report; not fully playable |
The honest summary: small 2D games already play well; big 3D games reach gameplay only on testing branches, slowly and with crashes. Speed is not the bottleneck — library coverage is.
AnyPS5 accuracy and compatibility: how many games tested so far
Accuracy for a relinker means how faithfully the rebuilt libraries and translated shaders reproduce console behaviour. The tracker's numbers, as of the October 23, 2026 community map: 301 games have a recorded stage; 38 reach gameplay (hand-checked reports or two or more confirmations); 7 are playable start to finish. The playable seven: Animal Well, Dead Cells, Dreaming Sarah, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hot Shots Golf 2, Minecraft and Road of Death — all on Windows. Underneath, all 1,166 AMD shader instructions the project tracks are decoded (100% shader coverage), and 4,588 of 10,791 catalogued system functions are done (42.52%). Note the percentage fell from 89.65% in mid-October — not because work regressed, but because the team declared almost three times as many functions in four days (finished count rose from 3,368 to 4,588 in the same window). More of the map was drawn, so the completed share dropped.
AnyPS5 compatibility: of 301 tracked games, how far each gets
Community blocker map generated October 23, 2026 (hand-checked reports or two or more confirmations). The 7 playable titles are inside the 38 that reach gameplay, which are inside the 301 tracked — so this is a funnel, not three separate groups.
One warning about the "100% shader coverage" headline: it means every shader instruction is decoded, not that PS5 games broadly work. Compatibility is 7 playable out of 301 tracked. Claims that shader coverage equals general PS5 support are misleading, and this article will not repeat them.
AnyPS5 system requirements
| Requirement | What you need |
|---|---|
| CPU | x86-64. AMD works directly; Intel needs --to-intel at conversion, which rewrites supported AMD-only instructions. |
| OS | 64-bit Windows 10/11 or a current 64-bit Linux. macOS can build the relinker only. |
| GPU | Vulkan 1.1 device with graphics + compute queues and swapchain presentation. A discrete GPU is preferred; pick one with ANYPS5_GPU. |
| RAM | At least 16 GB per the converter's documentation. On Windows, a title can commit up to 13,824 MiB of direct memory at once — installed RAM plus page file must cover it. |
| Disk | About 2 GB for the tool itself, plus room for your game files. |
| Game files | A PS5 executable you legally own. The project ships no games, firmware or keys — and neither does any legitimate download page. |
| Controls | Controllers recognised by SDL work without configuration; v0.1.3 added DualSense motion, rumble, adaptive triggers and light bar. Keyboard and mouse have built-in bindings you can override. |
| Download safety | The ONLY official download is github.com/boykopovar/AnyPS5/releases (currently v0.1.3). It is a command-line relinker plus system libraries — not a one-click game launcher, no installer, no GUI. Verify the archive SHA-256 against the release notes and avoid third-party download sites. |
Why AnyPS5 is dangerous for Sony
Today, Sony's business rests on three tolls: the console itself, the PlayStation Store's cut of every sale, and the timed-exclusive-then-PC-port double dip (a game sells at full price on PS5, then sells again when the PC port arrives years later). AnyPS5 attacks all three at once, because it does not need Sony's permission, hardware or store — and, crucially, it does not need per-game support. Any PS5 game runs once every system function and graphics feature it uses works. The project's remaining gap is library coverage, not a per-game mountain.
The immediate danger is small: 7 playable games, none of them system sellers. The trajectory is the threat. If coverage keeps climbing at the October pace, the question stops being "can it run indies" and becomes "can it run the exclusives" — and the GTA VI test is already dated: Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on consoles, and AnyPS5's own FAQ concedes it will not run it at launch realistically, while noting that the closest example today, GTA V, only plays its opening prologue on a testing branch. If a later official PC release arrives, that remains the easy way — but the existence of a free path removes Sony's and Rockstar's control over timing.
Sony also has a legal playbook, and the precedent is Nintendo's 2024 case against the Switch emulator Yuzu, which ended in a $2.4 million settlement and Yuzu shutting down. AnyPS5's defences are real but narrow: it ships no games, firmware or keys, its libraries are clean-room reimplementations, and it requires a game file you own. The grey area is how that file is obtained — dumping a PS5 game requires a jailbroken console, which itself sits in contested legal territory in many countries. Expect Sony to watch the compatibility count, not the headlines: the day a first-party exclusive goes fully playable is the day the legal letters start.
Also in this series: Strata runs a 125B AI model on a gaming PC, and Redox OS is a Rust operating system taking on Linux and Windows.
Can AnyPS5 run GTA 6?
Not at launch, realistically. Grand Theft Auto VI arrives November 19, 2026 on consoles. AnyPS5 needs no per-game support, but a huge open-world game uses a lot of system functions, and the closest example today — GTA V on PS5 — only plays its opening prologue on a testing branch. You would also need your own dump of the game. If GTA VI later gets an official PC release, that will be the easy way.
Is AnyPS5 legal?
The project ships no games, firmware or keys, and its libraries are clean-room reimplementations — that is its legal defence. The grey area is obtaining a game file, which requires a jailbroken PS5. Nintendo's 2024 case against the Switch emulator Yuzu ended in a $2.4 million settlement and Yuzu shutting down, which is the precedent Sony would likely follow if a first-party exclusive ever goes fully playable. This article is not legal advice; the rules differ by country.
Do I need a jailbroken PS5 to use AnyPS5?
AnyPS5 needs a PS5 game executable you legally own; it ships no game content, firmware or keys. How such files are obtained is outside the project — and dumping a game from your own console requires a jailbroken PS5, which sits in contested legal territory in many countries.
