Social Security is 6.2% up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% on all wages, plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax above your filing-status threshold. State tax applies your stateβs own standard deduction and 2026 brackets or flat rate.

Employers withhold using IRS percentage-method tables and your W-4, which can differ slightly from the annualised maths here. Extra allowances, multiple jobs, pre-tax benefits beyond what you entered, and local taxes also move the real number.
A traditional 401(k) reduces federal and (in most states) state income tax, but not Social Security or Medicare β those are charged on your full wages. The calculator models exactly that.
An extra 0.9% Medicare tax on wages above $200,000 (single), $250,000 (married filing jointly) or $125,000 (married filing separately). It is employee-only β your employer does not match it.
