Density Converter

Your inputs

Density changes with temperature — water is 1 g/cm3 near 4 degrees Celsius and slightly less when warm. The conversions are exact; the material values you start from are the approximation.

Density Converter guide

Convert kilograms per cubic metre to grams per cubic centimetre, kilograms per litre and pounds per cubic foot — for liquids, materials and shipping maths.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the value you want to convert.
  2. Choose the source and destination units. Use Swap to reverse them.
  3. Compare the live equivalents, then copy a result or download the table as CSV.

A worked example

Water has a density of 1 g/cm3, which is 1,000 kg/m3 or 62.43 lb/ft3. Ice, at about 0.917 g/cm3, is lighter — which is why it floats.

What you can do with this tool

How it works

Result = input × source-unit factor ÷ destination-unit factor. All factors are relative to the same base unit; intermediate values are not rounded.

Frequently asked questions

Which unit definitions are used?

kg/m³, g/cm³, kg/L, g/mL, lb/ft³, lb/gal (US). Read the labels carefully: regional or decimal/binary variants are separate choices.

Which is heavier: a kilogram of steel or a kilogram of feathers?

Neither — but steel, at about 7,850 kg/m3, packs that kilogram into a far smaller volume. Density compares mass per unit of volume, not total weight.
