Watermark PDF — Add a Text Watermark at Any Opacity & Angle guide

Stamp a text watermark — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, your company name, anything — across every page of a PDF: set the size, opacity, colour and angle, choose one centred mark or a tiled grid, and download the result.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose your PDF with the file button or drag it onto the panel. The tool reads it locally and reports the page count.
  2. Type your watermark text. Short, bold wording reads best: one or two words for a status mark, or a name and date for an ownership mark.
  3. Set the size and opacity. Around 10–20% opacity at 45° is the classic document watermark; raise the opacity if the mark must survive printing and photocopying.
  4. Pick the colour — light grey is unobtrusive, red signals a warning, and the custom picker matches a brand colour — then choose placement: a single centred mark per page, or a tiled grid repeated across the whole page.
  5. Click Add watermark and save the downloaded copy. Your original file is never changed.

A worked example

A freelancer sending a design proof marks every page “DRAFT — NOT FOR PRINT” diagonally at low opacity: the client can review and comment, but nobody can mistake the file for the final artwork or quietly pass it off as finished. When the job is approved, the clean original — untouched on disk — is what gets delivered.

How it works

The tool draws your text onto every page with a PDF library running in your browser, rotating it around the page centre for the diagonal layout, or repeating it in a measured grid for the tiled layout, sized relative to each page so mixed page sizes still look even. Opacity is true transparency, not a pale colour, so the mark blends over both text and images. The whole job runs on your device; nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What opacity should I use?

For a background status mark, 10–20% keeps the document easy to read while staying visible. Use 25–40% when the mark must remain obvious in print or after photocopying, and test one page before sending a long document.

What is the difference between centred and tiled?

Centred places one large mark in the middle of each page — the classic look for DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL. Tiled repeats smaller marks across the whole page, which is harder to crop away and suits proofs and samples.

Can a watermark be removed later?

From the downloaded copy, a determined person with editing software can remove it — watermarks discourage misuse, they do not prevent it. Your untouched original stays clean on your device either way.

Can I watermark with a logo image instead?

This tool stamps text. For an image mark, our Sign PDF tool places a transparent PNG on a chosen page; a dedicated image-watermark layout is not offered here.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened, stamped and saved entirely in your browser. Confidential documents — the kind that need watermarks — never leave your device.
