Compress Image to 20KB

An upload form says “image must be under 20 KB”? Drop your photos here and this tool re-encodes each one — quality first, then smaller dimensions only if needed — until it fits under 20 KB (20,480 bytes), or honestly reports the smallest it could reach. Batch as many as you like and download them together as a ZIP. Everything happens in your browser; files never leave your device. Need a different exact target for a single photo? Use Compress Image to Exact KB instead.

1 Upload 2 Compress 3 Download

Powered by the MozJPEG, WebP and AVIF encoders (the same engines Squoosh uses) — they keep far more quality at the same KB than a basic encoder. JPG cannot store transparency: transparent parts of a PNG come out on a white background in JPG output. WebP output keeps transparency. 1 KB here = 1,024 bytes, so 20 KB = 20,480 bytes.

Your compressed images, progress and download buttons will appear here.

Built for the strictest upload caps — visa and passport portals, exam forms and job applications that reject anything over 20 KB.

Compress Image to 20KB — Shrink Any Photo Under 20 KB guide

Compress JPG, PNG or WebP images to under 20 KB (20,480 bytes) for the strictest upload forms — visa and passport portals, exam applications and job sites that reject anything larger. Batch several images at once, keep the highest quality that fits, and download them individually or as one ZIP. Free, private and done entirely in your browser.

How to use this tool

  1. Drop one or more images onto the panel or click to choose them — JPG, PNG and WebP all work, and each file gets its own card showing its original size and dimensions.
  2. The target starts at 20 KB. Tap a preset (10, 20, 50, 100 or 200 KB) or type any custom value, and choose Auto, JPG or WebP output. JPG output places transparent parts of a PNG on white, as portals expect.
  3. Click Compress. Each image is re-encoded at the highest quality that fits under the target, and only shrunk in dimensions if quality alone cannot get there. Download each result from its card, or use Download all (.zip) when two or more are done.

A worked example

A 2.4 MB phone photo (3000 × 4000) targeted at 20 KB typically lands just under the 20,480-byte cap — quality is lowered first, and the photo is only resized (never below a usable 320 px on its long edge) when a detailed image needs it. A batch of passport-style photos for a family application can be prepared in one pass and downloaded as a single ZIP.

How it works

Each image is drawn to a browser canvas and re-encoded while a binary search tests quality levels, keeping the highest quality whose output is at or under the target bytes (1 KB = 1,024 bytes, so 20 KB = 20,480 bytes). If even the lowest quality is too big at full size, the image is scaled down in steps and the search repeats, stopping at a sane floor of 320 px on the long edge. An image that is already under the target in the chosen format is kept byte-for-byte — never re-encoded for no reason. In Auto mode a WebP original stays WebP and everything else becomes JPG; WebP output preserves transparency, JPG flattens it onto white.

Frequently asked questions

Why do so many forms demand an image under 20 KB?

Government, visa, exam and recruitment portals set very strict caps to keep their storage and page loads small. 20 KB is one of the most common limits for passport-style photos and signature scans. The limit is on the file size in bytes, not the dimensions — this tool targets the file size directly.

Will my photo still be recognisable at 20 KB?

For ID, passport and profile photos, yes — faces and documents stay clear at 20 KB. Very detailed scenes (crowds, foliage, noise) soften more, because detail is exactly what compression removes first.

What is the difference between this tool and Compress Image to Exact KB?

This tool is built for the 20 KB cap specifically and works in batches: add many images, compress them all to under 20 KB and download one ZIP. Compress Image to Exact KB handles a single image at any exact target you type.

What if the target cannot be reached?

The card is flagged and shows the smallest achievable file and its size. Try a slightly higher preset, or crop the image to the important area first with the Image Resizer and compress the crop.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs in your browser with the canvas API. Your photos never leave your device, and nothing is stored.
