How it works: HST provinces charge one combined tax. In BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan the provincial tax sits alongside the 5% GST; in Quebec, QST (9.975%) applies to the price before tax — there has been no tax-on-tax in Quebec since 2013. Place-of-supply rules decide which province's rate applies to a sale; this calculator applies the province you pick.

Rates (CRA GST/HST calculator and rates table, checked 4 November 2026): GST 5% in every province and territory; HST 13% Ontario, 14% Nova Scotia (from 1 April 2025), 15% New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island; PST 7% British Columbia, 7% Manitoba (RST), 6% Saskatchewan; QST 9.975% Quebec. Zero-rated (basic groceries, prescription drugs) and exempt supplies are outside this calculator's scope.

The combined rate is what a shopper actually pays on a taxable purchase of C$100: the tax runs from C$5 in Alberta and the territories to C$15 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Nova Scotia's 14% is the newest figure in the table — cut from 15% on 1 April 2025 — and the one most often printed wrong elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Which province has the highest sales tax in Canada?

New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, at 15% HST. The lowest is 5% — GST only — in Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Is QST charged on top of GST?

No. Since 2013 the QST applies to the price before GST — the two taxes are parallel, not stacked. On C$100 in Quebec: C$5 GST plus C$9.98 QST (9.975%), a combined 14.975%.

Why do sellers charge another province's rate?

Place-of-supply rules: for many goods and most services, the rate follows where the supply is made or the customer's address — which is why an Ontario seller shipping to BC charges BC's taxes. This calculator applies whichever province you select.

Are groceries taxed?

Basic groceries are zero-rated (0%) everywhere in Canada, and prescription drugs too; restaurant meals, by contrast, are fully taxable. The calculator assumes a regularly taxable purchase.

Add or remove Canada’s sales taxes in any province or territory for 2026: GST 5%, HST 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia, 15% in the other Atlantic provinces, PST in BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and QST 9.975% in Quebec — rates from the CRA’s official table.
