Work out the true monthly payment on a car loan: vehicle price, down payment, trade-in equity, sales tax on the right basis, fees and APR — plus total interest and a full amortization schedule.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade-in, 8% tax on the price minus trade-in, at 6% APR for 60 months: you finance $27,000, pay $521.99 a month and $4,319 in interest — the car costs $36,319 all-in.
The amount financed is the price plus sales tax and fees, minus your down payment and your trade-in equity (trade-in value minus what you still owe on it). The payment then follows the standard amortization formula, and the schedule applies each payment to interest first and the rest to principal — which is why early payments are mostly interest.
In most states, sales tax on a car is charged on the price minus the trade-in allowance, because you already paid tax on the trade-in when you bought it. A few states tax the full price — the toggle switches between the two.
That is negative equity: enter what you still owe in the trade-in fields and the calculator rolls the shortfall into the new loan, so the amount financed and the payment rise accordingly.
It lowers the monthly payment but raises the total interest — often by thousands. Compare the total cost figure at 48, 60 and 72 months before choosing.
